J. Michael Isom
Participation Confirmed

Michael Isom lives in Utah County with his wife of 21 years and four teenage children (with a fifth currently living overseas as a volunteer serving in the former Yugoslavia), but is grateful to have family members across the Wasatch Front. The family returned to Utah in 2017 after living in Saudi Arabia for two years, where Michael served as the Senior Legal Advisor for a bilateral program enabling allies in the region to find and mitigate public security threats. Currently he serves in a senior program management role with a large Utah technology company, while also advising veteran-owned small businesses (one of which just received the Utah Veteran-Owned Business of the Year award).

From 2013-2014, Michael was deployed to Afghanistan, where he leveraged his legal, policy, contracting and intelligence expertise in leading strategic business intelligence teams across three countries in vetting of more than 6600 vendors, denying $3.5 billion in US Government and Coalition Forces contracts to terrorist and criminal networks, and precluding 550+ high-threat vendors from accessing installations and resources.

Michael has served in all three branches of government and still advises congressional and executive offices on matters of national security and foreign affairs. Enlisting in the Utah National Guard in 1997, he later commissioned through ROTC at BYU, serving in multiple Pentagon, Special Operations and academic assignments. Currently, he supports the National Guard Bureau Office of Legislative Liaison, where he engages with Congress, the White House and Military Services on behalf of the nearly 350,000 National Guard members.

He is a certified Project Management Professional (PMP) and Lean Six Sigma (Green Belt), as well as holding a BA in Chinese from BYU, and a JD (with a focus in National Security Law) from Georgetown Law. He has also completed post-graduate work strategic intelligence, with an emphasis on cybersecurity and emerging technologies, and is a certified Mediator.

Michael has been a registered Republican since turning 18, and has served in Republican District and National roles, including advising on cybersecurity, national security and foreign affairs issues, attending CPAC and RNC conferences, and serving on the legal and national security advisory committees for 2008 and 2012 Republican presidential candidates. He has also served in other legislative/political positions in defense and national security offices, and currently, he serves as the Precinct Chair for LE23.

Michael has sat on the local, national and international boards of numerous non-profits, and currently is the National Eagle Scout Association (NESA) liaison for the Utah National Parks Council, and serves on a School Community Council within the Alpine School District.

Some of his recognitions include Eagle Scout, 2010 Officer of the Year (Washington DC National Guard), 2013 Military Volunteer of the Year (DC National Guard), Defense Meritorious Service Medal and Father of the Year (as voted on by five (not) random teenagers that may retract their vote for any reason at any time).

Having traveled and served around the world, Michael deeply appreciates the sustained, enduring strength conservative principles bring to a community and a country. However, he has also seen the financial and moral perils of government overreach, increasing apathy towards freedom and personal liberty, and the degradation of morals that this country, and civil society, are predicated on. As such, he recognizes the importance of remaining actively engaged in preserving that which make our community and Republic great.
