Lauren Jensen (lauren)

I was born the son of a hard working machinist. I loved my fathers work ethic and his ability to create things with his hands. I worked with my father in a machine shop at the age of 15 and over the years developed a good amount of skill in machining and manufacturing. My father always wanted to be an engineer when he was younger but, was unable to reach his dream as he had to spend long hours working to provide for his family.

Much of my father's passions rubbed off on me. Being a child who was always curious about how the world works, and also have built things with my hands, I wanted to be able to not only build but design and invent. Therefore, I went to school and obtained a degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Utah.

With all of the recent advances in technology, I have come to realize this world isn't lacking in innovation, but in good policy. I believe innovation with good public policies is capable of blessing the human family beyond belief. However, innovation with the bad public policy will only drive people to hopelessness and despair.

I believe in the goodness of the average person. People generally care about doing good in the world and in making the world a better place. I also believe people, in general, are prone to making bad decisions, not because they are bad, but because people learn from experience.

In some situations, people can learn from their mistakes immediately. When I was three years old I put a knife into an electrical socket. I was literally in for a shock. I learned immediatly that playing around with electricity was not a very smart thing to do.

In public policy, the choices we make often do not affect us for years or even generations to come. We often do not have the luxury of trial and error, so it is important to be able to make the best choices the first time around. How do we know if the choice we are making is a good one if it has never been tried before? We often don't, which is why it is so important to have good debates. Good debates give us an opportunity to try ideas out mentally and work out kinks before we put those ideas into action. Debating matters, it is not futile. It allows us to see flaws we wouldn't normally see because we are able to get an outside perspective. Debating also allows us to see the humanity of people we don't agree with once we understand how they came to believe what they believe.
